Anantapur sits on AIDS
bomb
ANANTAPUR: Anantapur district is
sitting on an AIDS bomb. Yet, the district lacks proper HIV virus
detection facilities and even the AIDS awareness campaign failed
to create an impact.
A National Highway that passes through
the district and proximity to mega cities like Bangalore and
Tirupati, which have a large floating population, is making
Anantapur an easy breeding ground for AIDS. According to medical
and health services officials, 322 AIDS cases were detected in the
district.
Of these 33 were due to sexual transmission.
About 50 cases were detected during routine blood sampling and 108
cases were detected by a non-governmental organisation.
The
problem is compounded as a large number of people from the
district go to high AIDS-incidence cities like Chennai and Mumbai
in search of jobs and carry the HIV virus while
returning.
But, the medical officials say that for
confirmation tests, the suspected AIDS patients are being sent to
Tirupati as the district does not have proper facilities. Though
blood tests for HIV virus should be conducted at the primary
health centre level, lack of proper monitoring and absence of
facilities is proving to be a stumbling block.
There are
complaints about improper sterilisation of the syringes and
needles in government hospitals.
The campaign to build
awareness about AIDS has also failed to take off with the District
Leprosy Eradication Wing, which was entrusted with the job, doing
precious little.
