Naxals blast AP railway
station, kill 8 Jharkhand policemen
GUNTUR/RANCHI: Coming on the heels of
a landmine blast that killed 14 people in a bus in Andhra
Pradesh’s Warangal district on Monday, Naxalites of the People’s
War Group outfit struck again on Wednesday, carrying out two
attacks in two states.
Early morning, they blew up the
Thummalchervu railway station in Andhra Pradesh’s Guntur district,
while before midday they set off a landmine under a police jeep,
killing eight policemen in Jharkhand’s extremist-hit Latedhar
district, police said.
At least 10 Naxalites, accompanied
by 20 sympathisers, entered the railway station, 80 km from Guntur
town, around midnight.
They asked the assistant
stationmaster, passengers and the families of railway employees to
leave.
Around 1.15 am, they detonated explosives. The
station building collapsed and railway communication system was
disrupted. The loss is estimated at Rs 35 lakh.
The railway
track suffered little damage and traffic was restored by 9
am.
In Ranchi, just six hours before Chief Minister Babulal
Marandi concluded the week-long second anniversary celebrations of
Jharkhand, PWG blasted a landmine in Lathedar district, killing
eight policemen.
Police said the patrol party carrying six
constables, a sub-inspector and a driver went over the landmine on
the highway between Neterhat and Betla Park around 11
a.m.
‘‘The blast was so powerful that the jeep was thrown
up in the air,’’ said Narendra Singh, a constable at Barwadih
station.
