Drought: Government seeks
Rs 2,373-cr aid from Centre
HYDERABAD: The State Government on
Thursday pleaded for sanction of assistance of Rs 2,373.44 crore
as against Rs 1,860 crore sought earlier - Rs 513.44 crore more -
to combat the acute drought conditions prevailing in the
State.
Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu indicated the
revised figure during the course of his meeting with the Central
drought assessment team headed by PK Agarwal, joint secretary in
the Union Ministry of Agriculture, before it left for New
Delhi.
The team arrived in the State on on Wednesday and
after visiting Nalgonda and Medak districts met the Chief Minister
at his residence this afternoon.
Naidu gave the following
break up for Rs 2,373.44 crore: Rs 420.10 crore (agriculture), Rs
96.63 crore (animal husbandry), Rs 17.26 crore (fisheries), Rs
400.16 crro (rural water supply), Rs 114.78 crore (urban water
supply), Rs 122.5 crore (Hyderabad Metro Water Board), Rs 52.91
crore (special nutrition), Rs 500 crore (wage employment), Rs
649.10 crore (APTransco). Naidu also sought the release of 20 lakh
metric tonnes of rice for use under the Food-for-Work
programme.
Naidu urged the Central team to understand the
gravity of the situation and help the State accordingly. He
pointed out that reservoirs and borewells had dried up forcing the
Government to transport water. As fodder scarcity was acute, the
Centre had to help the State with sufficient funds, he
said.
Chief Secretary Sathi Nair and Relief Commissioner D
C Rosaiah were among those present on behalf of the State
Government.
MEMORANDUM: Meanwhile, the Pradesh Congress
Committee (PCC) urged the Central drought assessment team to
recommend immediate release of assistance of Rs 2,200 crore and 25
lakh metric tonnes of rice sought by the State Government to meet
the drought situation.
State Congress leaders, led by CLP
leader Y S Rajasekhar Reddy, submitted a memorandum to the members
of the team to this effect here on Thursday. They expressed
concern over the delay in release of the assistance though the
drought was declared in August,
2002.
